‘Apex’ / NetflixWindow length for last week’s new PVOD releasesProtector (Magenta Light) - 46 daysLate Shift (Music Box) - 32 daysTow (Roadside Attractions) - 32 daysThe Pout-Pout Fish (Viva Kids) - 32 days As the list of last week’s new VOD entries shows, there was little new in the way of offerings for home viewers via those platforms. Only “Protector” (Magenta Light) starring long-time “Resident Evil” star Mia Jovovich and produced by franchise director Paul W.S. Anderson made either iTunes’ daily or Fandago’s full week top 10 lists (coming in at #6 at the latter). “Avatar: Fire and Ash” (Disney) returned as #1 on both (it had dropped to #2 last week at Fandango) in its third week of availability.Netflix, as usual, was anything but static. Veteran Icelandic action director’s first made-for-streaming film “Apex” with Charlie Theron, Taron Egerton, and Eric Bana took the #1 spot of the U.S. top 10 movie spot on release over the weekend. It replaced “Roommates,” another Netflix original, a comedy from Adam Sandler’s production company and starring his daughter Sadie. It remains #2, clearly having received a good audience response. In what is an unusual, close to unprecedented situation, today’s Netflix top 10 has as the #1-5 films all originals. After the top 2, from their “Untold” true crime documentary series, “The Shooting at Hawthorne Hill,” about an incident between an equestrian trainer and his student, is #3. “Thrash,” an earlier #1 original action film is still #4 its third week out. #5 is “180,” an original revenge drama from South Africa.“K-Pop: Demon Hunters” in its return to the top 10 got as high as #6 during the week, currently sitting in ninth. Other kids-friendly animated titles come and go, but “K-Pop” continues to be unstoppable. The two VOD charts as usual although mostly overlapping in titles do so in different order. Fandango, which ranks by revenue collected, has three other films available to view for $19.99 at #2-4 (“Scream 7,” “Reminders of Him,” and “Send Help”). iTunes, calculating by transactions, has “The Housemaid,” which has been available for nearly three months, in second (renting now for $5.99). It ranks #10 for the week at Fandango (the only title on their list under $9.99).“Tow” with Rose Byrne as a homeless woman fighting to retrieve her car is doing best among other new releases. It’s #17 today at iTunes, renting for only $6.99 on its initial release. The charts will change this week with the release of Disney’s “Hoppers” tomorrow. That would 53 days after its release, a week less than the studio’s usual window. Though not confirmed, published reports suggest “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” (Universal) will arrive next week, making a week ahead vital for the Pixar film. “Exit 8” (Neon) also per online reports may also go VOD tomorrow, 17 days after release if so. The Top TensiTunes ranks films daily by number of transactions, while Fandango at Home lists by revenue. The listings below are for Monday, April 27 (iTunes, with full week rank listed second) and the week of April 20-26 (Fandango). The distributors listed are current rights owners.
