Horror Director Zach Cregger's 2028 Movie Slate: The Flood & Gladys
2028 is now a major year for a horror director who recently made an Oscar-winning film. Horror is one of Hollywood's most exciting genres, as in recent years, it has introduced many unique filmmakers like Jordan Peele, Robert Eggers, and Ari Aster, while also delivering several hits at the box office. In 2025, horror had its best year ever at the box office. Its success came from many sequels in popular franchises, such as Final Destination: Bloodlines, The Conjuring: Last Rites, and Five Nights at Freddy's 2, as well as original films that captured the audience's attention, like Sinners and Weapons. It was also an exceptional year for horror at the Oscars. Sinners was nominated for a record-breaking 16 nominations, winning 4, including Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Cinematography. Weapons was also nominated, and won Best Supporting Actress. Weapons was a critical and box office hit, earning a 93% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing around $270 million worldwide. The film was directed by Zach Cregger, who previously had success with 2022's Barbarian. Cregger has become an exciting director in horror and 2028 just became a massive year for him after 2026's CinemaCon.

At this year's CinemaCon, studios gave presentations about their upcoming theatrical slate. During the Warner Bros. presentation, the studio announced that Cregger is directing two movies that a in 2028. The first is a sci-fi film called The Flood, which is scheduled to release in theaters on August 11, 2028. According to The Hollywood Reporter, details on the film are still light, but the plot does involve a "distant space station." The second film is Gladys, a prequel about Weapons' disturbing villain that will explore her origins. The film is set to release theatrically on September 8, 2028, per Variety, and will see Amy Madigan reprise the role for which she recently won Best Supporting Actress at the 2026 Oscars. Cregger is also set to co-write the screenplay with Zach Shields. After Weapons, it's likely that Gladys could be another hit in the horror genre, especially since Madigan is returning. It will be interesting to see what Cregger cooks up with The Flood, since it's his first sci-fi film. However, based on his track record, it should be a truly unique experience.
Cregger Also Has A Resident Evil Movie Coming Later This Year
Before 2028, Cregger has another movie coming out in 2026. He is directing the latest entry in the Resident Evil franchise, which debuts in theaters on September 18, 2026. The film stars Austin Abrams, Paul Walter Hauser, Kali Reis, and Zach Cherry.
The film is not related to the previous entries, and will tell an original story within this universe. According to Deadline, footage of the film was shown at CinemaCon, and Cregger called it a "big, scary ride" that is "true to the spirit of the games." He also said it will have "no narrative acrobatics, time jumps or disorienting chapter things" like his last two films had.
Speaking with Fangoria, Cregger said his film "exists in the world of Resident Evil 2," but won't use characters from the games, and will tell a separate story. While that could lead to a divisive response from game fans, it'll be intriguing to see what a distinct filmmaker like Cregger can do with this horror franchise.
