Thragg Gets Invincible's Coldest Moment Ever
Caution: spoilers ahead for Invincible season 4. Invincible is populated by characters who make looking cool seem like an effortless task. Every time Cecil Stedman unleashes a verbal zinger, he's the coldest person in the room. Invincible refusing to release Conquest's throat, despite his intestines being ripped out, looked as ruthless and heroic as it did incredibly painful. And when Debbie unleashed years of repressed anger toward Nolan in their big season 4 confrontation, she made the mighty Viltrumite visibly wither. All of those big moments have been eclipsed by the icy badass Invincible finally brings to the fore in season 4, episode 7: Thragg. As the leader of the Viltrum Empire, Thragg was bred for pure power before inheriting the throne following Emperor Argall's assassination. Thragg has been a menace in the shadows for some time, but as the war reaches Viltrum in Invincible season 4, the archvillain finally makes his presence felt on the frontlines of battle. What comes next is one of the coldest, most ruthless moments in Invincible's 5-year history. In the buildup, Thragg silently avoids any and all attacks sent his way, exerting minimal effort and never shifting more than a few inches from the same spot. After some back-and-forth with Omni-Man, Thragg unleashes his first attack, sending Mark and Oliver's father rocketing helplessly into the stratosphere. Thragg, rather predictably, brutalizes Oliver, but then comes the big moment itself. The clash Invincible fans had been waiting for - the first one-vs-one between Thragg and Invincible himself. Mark launches a massive, anger-fueled punch directly to Thragg's face. Thragg stands there, takes it, and doesn't show a single flicker of reaction. No Invincible character has ever looked colder.
Thragg had an immense amount of hype coming into Invincible season 4. The character has essentially been built up since the very beginning, at least implicitly. As soon as Invincible revealed the Viltrum Empire as a threat, the emperor himself was automatically installed as the show's biggest and most formidable enemy. With each and every Viltrumite that appeared during the interim, particularly Conquest, Thragg's stock continued to climb. If Conquest almost brought humanity to its knees by himself, Conquest's boss must be an even bigger monstrosity. Then, as the Viltrum War kicked off properly with Invincible season 4, Thragg began to feel increasingly like some mythical boogeyman. The ghoul giving Omni-Man and Thaedus sleepless nights. With so much hype surrounding him, Invincible faced an unenviable challenge delivering an antagonist worthy of the reputation. There was a real possibility that Invincible season 4 might simply end up debuting a villain who amounted to little more than Conquest in a fur scarf. Instead, Thragg succeeds as a unique figure who truly feels like the most dangerous entity in Invincible's known universe.
Casting Lee Pace went a long way toward making that possible. The Guardians of the Galaxy and The Hobbit actor brings a regal gravitas that captures Thragg's unbridled intensity without sacrificing the nuances behind what motivates him. The aforementioned confrontation with Omni-Man proves how Thragg can accelerate from calm menace to biblical anger in a second, and it's Pace's performance that truly conveys that.
The other major factor in ensuring Thragg lives up to the hype is seeing him absolutely no-sell that first punch from Mark. The nicest touch is how Thragg's face briefly morphs into a demonic, red-eyed form, and he goes from looking like the singer in a Queen tribute act to a literal devil. It's a visual detail that underscores the abomination lurking beneath Thragg's cool exterior, while also highlighting that, no matter how much Viltrum's emperor had been hyped up by Invincible in advance, the reality is even more terrifying.
