Dublin ranked among 'most colourful' cities in the world in new study
A new study has identified the world's most vibrant cities, with Dublin making it into the top 30.The research, carried out by Irish travel insurance specialists at JustCover, examined pixel colour data from images of 78 locations to determine which cities boast the most diverse and striking vistas. To assess each destination's vibrancy, representative photographs were chosen to capture typical scenery, shot in clear daylight and free from heavy filtering. A colour analysis tool was then employed to count the unique colours present in each photograph, exposing the most vivid locations overall.Within the top 15, destinations from the Americas dominate, featuring Guanajuato, Havana, New Orleans, Antigua, and New York City. These urban centres are distinguished by their colourful architecture, lively streets adorned with eye-catching signage, and neon illumination. Yet Europe also features prominently, with two Portuguese cities claiming spots in the top three, alongside strong showings from Dubrovnik and Barcelona, reports the Irish Mirror.Lisbon emerges as the planet's most colourful city, with over 2.6 million distinct colours detected in the analysis. The Portuguese capital is celebrated for its pastel-coloured buildings, decorative tiles adorning its historic quarters, and the famous yellow trams clattering through tight streets. The terracotta roofs form a key element of the local character, drawing millions of tourists to the lively city annually. Two Irish cities featured in the top 30. Cork secured 17th position with a vibrancy score of 54.3, while Dublin claimed 30th place, recording 42.6. Between them, the pair represent over 2.5 million distinct colours, demonstrating that vibrant landscapes needn't require long-distance travel.Aaron Brennan, Director at JustCover Travel Insurance, commented: "When planning a trip today, a city's visual appeal can be just as influential as its culture and cuisine. Places like Santorini are often associated with colourful scenery, but when it comes to colour variety, the research highlights which destinations truly stand out as a feast for the eyes."It's not just architecture; even busy urban centres like Kuala Lumpur or New York City impress due to dense signage, billboards, and neon lighting, which increases the visual variation captured across the cities."It's also encouraging to see some Irish cities rank highly too, which may not always be the first destination to come to mind, but highlights the beautiful aesthetics that can be found closer to home too."Want to see more of the stories you love from Dublin Live?
