Dublin driver caught going over double speed limit in northside residential area
Nearly 200 drivers were caught drunk behind the wheel while over 4,000 were caught speeding over the Easter bank holiday weekend - with one in north Dublin clocking in a speed of 103km/h in a 50km/h zone.Gardai conducted their usual extensive bank holiday roads policing operation from 7am on Thursday until 7am this morning to ensure road safety over the weekend. During this period, there were three deaths on our roads, and five serious injury collisions.Gardai said over 175 drivers were detected for intoxicated driving, and over 4,000 drivers were detected for speeding during the operation. Notable speeds detected over the operation included:103km/h in a 50km/h zone on the Malahide Road, Donnycarney, Dublin 3102 km/h in a 60km/h zone on the Stillorgan Road, Blackrock, Co. Dublin138 km/h in a 50km/hr zone on Cashel Road, Cahir, Tipperary98km/h in a 60km/h zone on the North Road, Drogheda, Louth138km/h in a 80km/h zone on N60, Manulla, Mayo102km/h in a 80km/h zone on R148, Kilmurry, Enfield, Meath147 km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N11, Newcastle, Co. Wicklow141 km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N22 Killaha, Killarney, Co. KerryOver 290 drivers were hit with fixed charge notices for using their phones behind the wheel, while over 95 were pinged for not wearing a seatbelt. A garda spokesperson said: "An Garda Síochána continues to appeal to all road users to never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, to slow down and to always choose a speed that is appropriate to the driving conditions, to wear your seatbelt and keep your eyes always on the road."Drivers should continue to give driving their full attention, slow down and take extra care." Gardai in Dublin city centre posted yesterday that they had detected a truck driver going more than 30 km/h over the speed limit along the North Quays.They said: "As part of bank holiday traffic operations in the city centre area of Dublin 7, the Bridewell Communtiy team have made a number of arrests and detected a number of persons for speeding and intoxicated driving. One truck driver was found to be 33km/h over the speed limit on the North Quays."This is a danger to the driver and of course to vulnerable road users and pedestrians using our roads and paths.
