Five detained after car fleeing gardai crashes into two vehicles in Dublin

Five men have been detained after a car failed to stop for Gardaí and was later involved in a collision with two vehicles in south Dublin on Thursday afternoon. The incident began at approximately 1.40pm on Thursday, when a car carrying five occupants failed to stop for Gardaí in the Knocklyon area of Dublin 16.The vehicle was subsequently involved in a collision with two cars driven by members of the public on Grange Road in Rathfarnham. All five occupants of the car fled the scene on foot but were pursued by Gardaí, with assistance from the Garda Air Support Unit.Gardaí later established that the occupants were suspected of involvement in a burglary in the Walkinstown area of Dublin 12 a short time earlier. The five males were subsequently detained at Garda stations across the Dublin Metropolitan Region. Two of those detained, a man in his 50s and a juvenile, were arrested under the Theft and Fraud Offences Act and held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.The juvenile has since been released pending further investigations.A third man, aged in his 20s, was arrested on foot of a bench warrant. Two other men, also in their 20s, were detained for the purposes of a search under the Misuse of Drugs Act and were later released without charge. The three occupants of the two cars struck during the collision were taken to Tallaght Hospital for assessment.Gardaí say investigations into the incident are ongoing.Subscribe to our newsletter for the latest news from the Irish Mirror direct to your inbox: Sign up here.
