Cyclist killed in crash with truck in Balbriggan as gardai arrest man
A man has died in a crash involving a truck and bicycle in Dublin this afternoon. Emergency services were called to the scene on Dublin Street (R132) in Balbriggan at around 12.40pm.The cyclist, a man aged in his 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene. The road remains closed tonight for a forensic collision investigation and local diversions are in place.Gardai arrested a man aged in his 30s at the scene. They are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to contact them.A Garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision involving a truck and a cyclist, which occurred in Balbriggan, Co. Dublin, today, Monday 16th March 2026."At approximately 12:40pm, Gardaí and emergency services responded to the collision, on Dublin Street (R132), Balbriggan, Co. Dublin."A male cyclist, (aged in his 70s) was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Coroner has been notified and a post-mortem examination will be arranged."A male (aged in his 30s) was arrested at the scene."The scene remains preserved for technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and the road is currently closed. Local traffic diversions are in place."Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to come forward. Road users with camera footage (including dash-cam) who were travelling in the area of Dublin Street (R132), Balbriggan, Co. Dublin on Monday 16th March 2026 between 12:00pm and 1:00pm are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí."Anyone with information is asked to contact Balbriggan Garda Station on (01) 666 4500, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
