Upcoming mid-size models: Lucid teases two SUVs and a robotaxi

Lucid has repeatedly announced plans to expand its lineup beyond its two luxury models, the Air and Gravity, by introducing more affordable electric vehicles with base prices under $50,000. During a recent investor day, the US startup revealed further details. Two of the three announced model ranges will be SUVs, while Lucid will share more about the third model at a later date. Additionally, the company teased a robotaxi concept. To clarify: the two SUVs, which feature a gently sloping roofline in the images, will be named Lucid Cosmos and Lucid Earth, with the Cosmos positioned as the sportier option. The third, as-yet-unnamed mid-size model could be a more functional off-road variant, as Lucid aims to attract ‘those with an even more adventurous spirit’ with this vehicle. This model also appears taller than the other two. The Cosmos is designed to impress with high performance and spaciousness, while the Earth strikes a balance between sportiness and practicality. Visually, the SUVs will draw inspiration from Lucid’s luxury models, with lower prices achieved primarily through production efficiencies.“These vehicles deliver unmistakable Lucid design and driving characteristics, while embracing a radically simpler, more efficient approach to manufacturing and cost,” said Derek Jenkins, Senior Vice President of Design and Brand at Lucid. The carmaker also emphasised that ‘industry-leading world efficiency’ will enable the required range with significantly smaller battery packs. However, it did not specify what this ‘required range’ entails. Technical details remain scarce, with Lucid only mentioning a completely new electric drivetrain (‘Atlas’) for the mid-size platform. This drivetrain is expected to support a 0–60 mph (96 km/h) sprint in 3.5 seconds and deliver an efficiency of 4.5 miles/kWh, equivalent to 7.24 km/kWh.In terms of design, Lucid describes the new mid-size models as having a lighter and simpler structure, featuring ‘identical front and rear housings and mounts to improve manufacturing scale and cost efficiency.’ For example, the SUVs will omit the decorative trim found on the doors of the luxury models.Lucid also unveiled a concept for a two-seater robotaxi called Lunar, based on the mid-size platform. According to the company, the model ‘highlights the potential of the company’s Midsize platform to support future autonomous and commercial applications.’ It remains unclear how Lucid plans to develop this concept further. However, the manufacturer emphasised that it is in advanced discussions with Uber about deploying vehicles from the mid-size platform—’at a scale similar to the Gravity robotaxi program.’ These talks are still ongoing.Lucid is under pressure to achieve profitability more quickly. In February, the cash-strapped US EV manufacturer announced it would lay off 12% of its workforce. During the investor day, the company strongly emphasised its short-term ambitions to generate more revenue. In 2026, Lucid plans to focus on scaling the Lucid Gravity, expanding its global market presence, advancing software offerings and services, and reducing costs.Lucid also provided an outlook on planned software and technology updates, including an AI assistant for the vehicle, and shared its roadmap for autonomous driving.“Lucid has already proven its capabilities through technology and product leadership,” said Marc Winterhoff, Interim CEO at Lucid. “Today, we’re keeping the same Lucid product and technology DNA intact, while applying increased scale, capital efficiency, and cost discipline, and materially reduced costs, to enable a great business with a clear and credible path to profitability and free cash flow, supported by what we are executing now and what we are building for the future.”It remains unclear when the mid-size models will join Lucid’s two luxury EVs. However, this will not happen overnight. In late January, it was announced that Lucid had begun building prototypes of its mid-size model. While these are currently being assembled at Lucid’s headquarters in Casa Grande, Arizona, series production of the mid-size models is likely planned for a different location. Earlier statements by Interim CEO Marc Winterhoff suggest that the mid-size models will be produced at Lucid’s factory in Saudi Arabia.media.lucidmotors.com, ir.lucidmotors.com (Investor Day presentation; PDF)
