Inquiry finds lives could have been saved in deadliest small boat Channel crossing
An inquiry into the deadliest Channel crossing on record has concluded that some of the 31 victims could have been saved.
It found that “systemic failures, missed opportunities” and staff shortages in the UK’s coast guard response contributed to the failure to rescue people.
The tragedy occurred when a crowded inflatable boat capsized in darkness in November 2021, leaving just two survivors who were discovered nearly 12 hours after the first calls for help.
