Tributes paid as Jim Gavin resigns as chair of Inner City Taskforce

Dublin city councillors have lauded Jim Gavin’s leadership following his formal resignation as chair of the North East Inner City Taskforce (NEIC).Mr Gavin was first appointed to the board in 2023 and temporarily stepped back from the role to pursue his failed presidential run last year. As a campaign that was clouded by a tenant debt scandal, the former football manager withdrew his bid after it emerged he owed money to his former tenant dating back to 2007.Lord Mayor of Dublin Councillor Ray McAdam issued his thanks to Mr Gavin for his public service and “the leadership he brought to the North East Inner City Initiative during his term as Chair.” The NEIC was first established in 2016 and seeks to oversee social and economic regeneration in that part of the city.“The NEIC has proven how effective joined-up action can be, turning plans into delivery for local communities. That’s exactly why a new, hands-on Chair must be appointed quickly,” Lord Mayor Mc Adam stated.“As Lord Mayor, I will be seeking an early meeting with the Taoiseach and Tánaiste to secure a clear timeframe for the appointment, protect momentum, and drive implementation of the NEIC Strategic Plan 2024–2027.”North Inner City Councillor Nial Ring also paid tribute to Mr Gavin following the formal announcement of his departure. He stated that the initiative benefited from Mr. Gavin’s leadership as it oversaw essential government funding and social programmes for the North East Inner City.“While known nationwide for his unprecedented success at the helm of the Dublin Senior Football team - leading them to a historic six All-Ireland titles in a row - Jim Gavin brought that same legendary discipline and ‘team-first; philosophy to the challenges facing Dublin’s North East Inner City” Cllr Ring said."I want to personally thank Jim Gavin for his immense contribution as Chair of the NEIC. Jim is a man who knows how to deliver results. Just as he led the Dublin team to heights never seen before in the GAA, he brought a level of professionalism, expertise, and strategic focus to his Chairmanship of the NEIC that has been truly transformative."He didn’t just chair a board; he applied the same discipline and dedication we saw on the pitch to the complex challenges facing our community. Under his leadership, the various funding strands for the North East Inner City have been handled with a level of precision and professionalism that has left the initiative in a much stronger position” he added."Jim has earned the respect and admiration of everyone in Dublin. We were fortunate to have someone of his calibre volunteering his time and talent to our area. I wish him the very best in his future and thank him for his service to our community. The mural of him on Ballybough Road will be a constant reminder to the north inner city community of Jim‘s contribution to the area, both on and off the pitch.”Mr Gavin’s replacement has yet to be officially appointed, but the board will be chaired on an interim basis by Liz Canavan, Assistant Secretary General at the Department of the Taoiseach, who has been in the role since October. This content is funded by the Local Democracy Reporting SchemeJoin our Dublin Live breaking news service on WhatsApp. Click this link to receive your daily dose of Dublin Live content.
