Employment increases 1.9% in October

Employment increased 1.9% year-on-year in October as the economy net added 46,700 jobs, according to the Central Statistics Office (CSO). The total number of employees in Ireland rose to 2,554,600 from 2,553,000 in September and 2,507,900 in October 2024. On a monthly basis, employment decreased 0.1% among men and increased 0.2% for women. The largest monthly increase by economic sector was recorded in professional, scientific & technical activities (+0.6%). There were also marginal gains in public administration and defence (+0.2%), accommodation and food service activities (+0.1%), administrative and support services (+0.1%), and transportation and storage (+0.1%). Agriculture, forestry and fishing saw the largest monthly decline at -1.4% ahead of services (-0.9%), motor vehicle repair (-0.4%) and financial, insurance and real estate (-0.3%). The largest monthly decrease among age groups was observed in the 34-44 range (-0.3%), but there was also a month-on-month decline among the 22-34 set (-0.2%). Employment grew quickest from October among the 65+ group at 1.4% and the 15-19 years-olds (+0.9%), otherwise growth was slight across the board.
