Lara Gillespie wins gold for Ireland at UCI Track World Championships
Lara Gillespie(Image: JAVIER TORRES/AFP via Getty Images)Lara Gillespie has bagged a gold medal in the Elimination race at the UCI Track World Championships, storming to an impressive podium finish.The current European Champion in the Scratch event has added to her international medal collection, after standing her ground in a formidable field.Gillespie, 24, triumphed over Katie Archibald of Great Britain who came second, with Belgium's Helene Hesters securing third place in Santiago.A group of 24 competitors took to the track for the mass start, which lasted 13 minutes and 58 seconds, with the cyclist in last place every two laps exiting the competition.There were a couple of early crashes in the race, with Gillespie and Archibald emerging as the final contenders. The Carlow native bided her time and brilliantly sped away from Archibald in the final stages to clinch the win.
