Donald Trump has claimed he could “settle” any conflict over the Falkland Islands, warning that a war between the UK and Argentina would be a “potential disaster”.

The US president has previously suggested he may not support Britain’s sovereignty over the Falklands if Argentina were to launch an attack. He returned to the long-running dispute during a visit to Dublin on Saturday.

Speaking to GB News’ Bev Turner, President Trump suggested the UK might not be prepared to send forces to the Falklands in the event of an Argentine invasion, as happened in 1982, pointing to the distance involved.

Asked about the prospect of Britain responding to an attack, he said: “I’m not sure they’re doing that. They have a little problem with immigration.

“They have a little problem with energy, and then have some other problems they have to take care of.”

He added: “I’m sure I’ll be called into that potential disaster, but if they do, I’ll probably be able to settle, settle it out.”
