December 7th, 1958. Ken Martin backs the family station wagon out of a driveway in Northeast Portland with his wife Barbara and their three daughters inside. They are headed up the Columbia River Gorge to
cut Christmas greens..a two-hour errand.
Five months later, a reporter walks through their living room
and the Santa suit Ken was going to wear is still draped over the chair by the fireplace. Nobody ever came home to move it.
What followed was one of the largest manhunts in Pacific Northwest history: 5 Oregon counties, two in Washington, sonar sweeps, and a reservoir lowered five feet. The river gave back only two of the
daughters. Then a Multnomah County detective named Walter Graven went on the record..foul play..and spent the next 30 years paying for it.
A .38 found hidden beside the highway and handed back without investigation.
A serial number matching a gun missing from the store where the family's son once worked.
Two ex-convicts in a brothel across the river from a cliff with fresh tire tracks.
And a sheriff who took one of Graven's reports and burned it in front of him.
In November 2024, a private diver named Archer Mayo finally found the 1954 Ford station wagon, 50 feet down in the old locks at Cascade Locks.
In April 2026, Othram's DNA lab identified Kenneth, Barbara, and Barbie Martin, and Hood River County closed the case: no evidence of a crime. But here's the part nobody talks about.
The car was found 25 miles from where Graven searched for three
decades. The men he fought his whole career were right about the WHERE. Nobody has ever explained the burned report.

Nobody in this story was ever charged with a crime in connection with the Martin case. The Hood River County Sheriff's Office closed the investigation in April 2026 having found no evidence of a crime.
