CZECH REPUBLIC: Polish company Enik has won one of its largest export orders, a €16.2m six-year framework agreement to supply air-conditioning units for retrofitting to up to 123 Škoda 15T ForCity trams in Praha.
The trams were delivered in two batches between 2010 and 2019. While the 125 trams in the second batch were fitted with air-conditioning from new, the first 125 were not. Retrofitting has been discussed for many years, and a pilot scheme saw two trams modified in 2012 and 2019.
In October 2025 operator DPP called tenders for the supply of air-conditioning units for the remaining 123 vehicles, attracting three bids.
The winner was Łódź-based Enika, which supplies traction systems, static converters and charging infrastructure for public transport vehicles and since 2016 has also developed a range of tram air-conditioning systems which have been supplied to Kraków, Łódź, Wrocław, and Gdańsk.
The air-conditioning units for Praha’s Škoda 15T fleet are being developed specifically for the project. They are based on Enika’s iGlacio product family, and are designated iGlacio 17AC/6AC. Each unit will provide 17 kW of cooling capacity and 6 kW of heating capacity in winter, and each tram will have three units.
Installation will be carried out in Łódź in co-operation with city transport operator MPK Łódź, which will provide workshop facilities as well as specialist personnel. One tram will be transported from Praha to Łódź every two weeks, while another vehicle will return.
‘This project for our counterparts at Praha’s public transport operator allows us to apply our extensive expertise in tram maintenance and modernisation’, said Dariusz Domański, Head of the Technical Department at MPK Łódź, on July 10. ‘The Škoda 15T features, among other things, a distinctive sandwich roof structure that is uncommon in tram design. The project will enable us to fully utilise the specialist knowledge and experience of our engineering team.’
