Learner driver's 'poor choice of co-pilot' lands them with a fine

A learner driver has been fined and is set to receive penalty points after they made a ‘poor choice’ for a co-pilot. Learner drivers are legally forbidden from operating vehicles without an accompanying driver with them. An accompanying driver is a person who has their full license for the same vehicle category. Their accompanying driver had been disqualified from driving, therefore ineligible as an accompanying driver. Irish law states that a road-user operating a vehicle on a learner permit, must display an L plate on the front and back of the car. For those who have just passed their driving test, they are required to display N plates for a period of two years. The signs notify fellow road-users of a drivers inexperience, which should then allow for additional patience and increased spacing. Gardaí in Kilkenny took to Facebook to share the learner permits misfortune. ‘A learner accompanied by a disqualified driver was in formed that the disqualified driver does not count as an accompanying driver,’ they wrote on social media. They were also directed to leave the Motorway as learner permit holders are forbidden form using same. ‘Fines and penalty points to follow.’ Fellow social media users took to the comments, with one curious as to why the car was not seized following the string of rule breaks. Gardaí answered: ‘Section 41 is frequently used in such cases and always in no insurance stops. ‘Without giving specifics of this case, cases where small children are in the car or an infirm passenger or additional issues may result in discretion being used. ‘This does not extend to issue of penalties.’ Another person commented: ‘The more of these and similar posts the more I start to think that the Irish really are thick.’
