Foreign Office issues travel update for exotic destination over 'health risks'
The Foreign Office has issued updated travel guidance for a popular holiday destination amid concerns over "health risk" warnings. The FCDO has provided "updated information on what health risks you'll face in Maldives".The advisory was released on Friday, April 24, stating: "Before you travel check that your destination can provide the healthcare you may need and you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation."The guidance emphasised: "This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant." Additional advice included: "Dial 102 and ask for an ambulance. Contact your insurance company quickly if you're referred to a medical facility for treatment."Travellers are being urged to consult the latest vaccination recommendations at least eight weeks prior to departure, checking the NHS travel vaccinations page for information on where to obtain jabs and associated costs. The FCDO also highlighted that medications which are prescribed or purchased legally in the UK may be subject to different regulations abroad, reports Birmingham Live. Links to best practice guidance and comprehensive information about potential health risks are available through TravelHealthPro.Healthcare infrastructure remains limited across the Maldives, with the only fully-equipped hospitals located in Malé and Hulhumalé. While most resort islands have access to medical practitioners or basic facilities, many are situated several hours away from emergency medical services. The FCDO has helpfully compiled a directory of medical providers throughout the Maldives where English-speaking staff are available. Further guidance on healthcare for those living in the Maldives is also available via the FCDO website, it adds.Travel Health Pro says: "Travellers should ideally arrange an appointment with their health professional at least four to six weeks before travel. However, even if time is short, an appointment is still worthwhile."This appointment provides an opportunity to assess health risks taking into account a number of factors including destination, medical history, and planned activities. For those with pre-existing health problems, an earlier appointment is recommended."
