Short film based on Irish author's iconic Mary McAleese story selected for film festival
A short film based on author Séamas O’Reilly’s hilarious Twitter thread about an interaction with Mary McAleese has been made.
The author of ‘Did Ye Hear Mammy Died’ has been part of two of the country’s most iconic moments in recent memories — the first when Tommy Bowe balked at the number of siblings he had, and the second when he met Mary McAleese.
For the uninitiated, the then 18-year-old experimented with ketamine on what he thought was a day off from working at a music venue in Dublin, when he was reminded that he agreed to come in for a few hours that night.

When he came into the venue right as the mood-altering substance was kicking in, he was told he would be offering drinks to then President McAleese, sparking a thread that would enter the Irish consciousness back in 2018.
After the post was shared on Reddit, someone suggested that the thread should be made into an animated movie, and Séamas teased back in 2019 that they were ‘way ahead of you’ — and announced that the film was finally on the way.
Not only has the animated short film, which was superbly titled ‘Me, Myself and Mary’, managed a brilliant cast of Chris O’Dowd and Aisling Bea, but the film will be played at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival in New York as part of their animated shorts roster.

Curated by Whoopi Goldberg — yes, the very same Whoopi Goldberg — the film will be screening at the Shorts Theatre alongside Violet and Marlowe Rob a Bank, Under the Lake, Saba, and APART.
‘So, 8 years ago, I told a story that changed my life. Shortly after, my pal John Michell asked if he could turn it into a film,’ Séamas wrote on Twitter (X). ‘Well, I’m DELIGHTED TO ANNOUNCE that ‘Me, Myself & Mary’ is not only finished, but has been selected for@Tribeca’s animated shorts roster this year.’
‘The film stars Chris O’Dowd as me and Aisling Bea as my boss,’ he continued, before adding: ‘I’m in awe of all the hard work John and his team did to make this film so incredible. I’d also like to give a massive thanks to Tribeca — and Whoopi Goldberg, specifically (!!) for supporting it so emphatically.’
‘I am extraordinarily excited for people to see it!’
