Criminal Record star shares unusual show detail and viewers will be surprised
Peter Capaldi has revealed a surprising detail about Criminal Record ahead of the programme's return.The Apple TV crime thriller is poised to return for its second series, and the actor appeared on ITV's This Morning alongside co-star Cush Jumbo to hint at what viewers can expect, reports the Mirror. However, he left presenters Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary looking a little surprised when he shared: "We don't rehearse."In the programme, Peter plays veteran detective Daniel Hegarty while Cush is detective June Lenker, who is at an earlier point in her career, and they clash over a historic murder investigation.The pair explained to the presenters that avoiding too much preparation time together helped them to maintain the "crackle" in their on-screen dynamic.READ MORE: Who is Cush Jumbo? I've known Cush since she was a young actress, a crazy kid with a dream, and I've watched her blossom into this celebrated classical actress... and she's really become an international treasure. So we have to be careful to have to put distance between each other.""Because you can have too much fun, you two?" asked Alison, as Peter responded: "Yes, and these characters don't have any fun.""We're quite silly," said Cush, saying that she met Peter 20 years ago and that they "immediately bonded"."We banter well... we just love each other, and they hate each other, and so we can't warm to each other," she said. "What we like to do is, we call it, protecting the crackle.""We've got to protect that by keeping a bit of a distance," she added."So it's a little bit like method acting you're doing, a little bit?" Alison asked."Well, no, it's like we just don't rehearse!" Peter laughed, as Alison joked: "Sounds like us!""But also it means I don't know what Cush is going to do until Dan, until my character, sees what she's doing," Peter said. "It's more spontaneous," added Cush.When quizzed about whether the characters grow closer in the new series, the actress revealed: "No. No, Alison. They will never be friends."June has risen up the ranks a little bit and thinks that she's never going to have to work with this guy again. But, she's trying to solve a case that's really important to her, where she's watched a young kid being murdered, which happens in episode one, so that's not a spoiler. But this is an opportunity for her to solve that crime."However, she knows the pitfalls of this, this time. She knows where the trap doors are, but of course, she doesn't, because he's always got more trap doors!"The second series of Criminal Record starts on Wednesday April 22 on Apple TV.
