‘Fight AI-driven resmearch with points for peer review’
Professor pitches high-quality reviews as antidote to firms using scientific techniques for own commercial ends
High-quality peer review should be incentivised through a points system to tackle the growing risks from AI-driven “bullshit science” pushed by companies with ulterior motives, an academic has argued.
David Comerford, professor of economics at the University of Stirling, told Research Professional News that incentivising rigorous peer review would be a first line of defence against the rising tide of “resmearch”, where special interest groups or firms use AI to trawl large, public datasets and produce findings that seem to support their product or stance, even if there are other findings that contradict them.
