Dublin City Council installs 40 secure cycle lockers in city centre pilot scheme
Dublin City Council is trialling 40 bicycle lockers of varying designs throughout the city centre. These storage units are designed to be used for brief periods, allowing visitors to safely store their bicycles for several hours. Protected bicycle lockers will be positioned at multiple public sites, both roadside and off-road, during Spring 2026.The initial cycle lockers have now been set up on Capel Street and Grafton Street Lower and are up and running. There will be an assessment phase to gauge their effectiveness after a year.A cycle locker is a secure unit with a lockable door which is designed to contain a single bicycle. The cycle lockers will feature smartlocks, allowing users to unlock and secure their locker - and settle payment for their bike's storage - entirely through a straightforward smartphone app. Bleeper is overseeing the scheme on Dublin City Council's behalf. These lockers differ from the Bike Bunkers being deployed separately to offer protected cycle storage in residential neighbourhoods.Lord Mayor of Dublin Councillor Ray McAdam said: "I am delighted to launch this innovative pilot of cycle lockers in Dublin City, a practical step forward in building a more active, living and engaged city.""We know that one of the biggest barriers to cycling is the simple question of where to leave your bike safely. This pilot tackles that challenge head on by providing secure, convenient parking in the very places people want to be, whether that is to meet friends, support local businesses, or enjoy everything our city centre has to offer.""If we are genuinely committed to creating an active city, we must make cycling more straightforward. If we are genuinely committed to a living city, we must make it more straightforward for people to spend time here. And if we are genuinely committed to an engaged city, we must eliminate the minor, daily barriers that prevent people from participating fully in city life."These cycle lockers may be a modest intervention, but they represent a significant shift in how we think about mobility, accessibility and the everyday experience of Dublin."Alec Dundon Senior Executive Engineer, City Centre Projects, Dublin City Council said: "Installing these cycle lockers lets us see how secure short‐term bike parking works in busy urban spaces. This pilot will help us understand where lockers are most effective and how people use them, shaping future cycling infrastructure that is practical, reliable and supports more people to feel confident cycling into the city for short trips."Want to see more of the stories you love from Dublin Live?
