MAIL ON SUNDAY COMMENT: Kick out all the woke commissars and build Forces to be proud of
It is of course ridiculous that the British Army has launched a review into whether male soldiers should be able to wear make-up. It is even more ridiculous that it is not even the first time such a consultation has been held.But what if it is meant to be ridiculous?Since what we used to call political correctness first emerged in this country 40 or so years ago, it has always been targeted at conservative institutions. These have been accused of being racist, sexist and homophobic, and subjected to successive waves of inquisitions to change their ‘culture’.Even the Conservative Party, most especially under the leadership of Lord Cameron, was severely re-educated. It ended up, for many years, espousing opinions on almost all matters which were virtually indistinguishable from the views of the BBC. It has only recently begun to recover.Those directly affected by these small but profound cultural revolutions are keenly aware of them. They learn to keep their mouths shut rather than express traditional opinions. The route to promotion, even to keeping your job, may depend on it.It is easy and enjoyable for outsiders to mock this sort of thing. But it is time for conservatives and patriots to take it as seriously as its proponents do.What can be the state of the chain of command in the Ministry of Defence, if it allows all serving soldiers to be asked whether they think the Army’s men can use cosmetics and wear their hair like women?A proper army has no time for such stuff. It is quite obvious to anyone who knows anything about military discipline that such discussions are silly and irrelevant at best, damaging at worst. Junior soldiers take part in their graduation parade at the Army Foundation College, Harrogate, in August last year A British Army poster appeals to 'snow flakes' for their 'compassion' But the ideologues who work their way into ministries and who play these games know what they are up to. We already have schools that do not teach and police who do not fight crime. Instead they reinforce the new egalitarian, sexual and green dogmas which obsess the modern Left.The Armed Forces, until recently the last sure fortresses of conservative thought and tradition, have for long been the targets of such campaigns. Now that we teeter on the edge of involvement in the largest conflict of recent times, and as the shadow of war grows taller and darker, this sort of folly has to stop.The absolute, firm, sole purpose of Armed Forces is to defend these islands against our enemies. If they are not trained and equipped to do this, then the Government has failed in its first duty. It is not fit to rule or earning its pay.After long years of neglect and woke folly, our military policies are today weighed in the balance and found wanting. Kick out the politically correct commissars in the Army, the Navy and the Air Force. And rebuild Forces of which we can once again be proud.And if you cannot or will not, then go, and make way for a Government which will.
