GAA Congress 2026: Live updates as motion to extend county season goes before delegates
After Friday night’s election of a new president, who will succeed Jarlath Burns in 2027, Saturday sees the delegates at this year’s GAA Congress to consider motions before them. The motions that have garnered most media attention in the run up to this year’s Congress are those concerned with the length of the inter-county season and the positioning of the All-Ireland senior finals in the calendar. There will be a motion to move the All-Ireland finals into August, which is backed by the GAA’s Ard Comhairle, while the GPA are also promoting a motion that ‘The Senior Inter-County playing season in all codes shall not exceed 30 scheduled competition weekends in any calendar year.’Both motions would have implications for pre-season competitions, such as the Dr McKenna Cup as well as the scheduling of club championships in various counties. There will also be a motion brought by the Amateur Status Review Committee, which will seek to establish a certification process which counties much go through in order to compete at inter-county level. This would involve the establishment of a Certification, Governance and Oversight Committee, which would overview this process. Among the aims of this motion are to monitor and curb the spending of counties on their senior county teams. Our reporter on the ground Andy Watters will bring you updates throughout the day on how those motions fare and the mood on the ground.Read more:The Monday Club podcast: Why moving the All-Ireland finals to August makes no senseDonegal GAA oppose extension to intercounty season should Dr McKenna Cup be at risk‘It has to be more than just winning at all costs’: Data sharing for the greater good, insists GPA chief Tom Parsons‘That’s another red flag’: GPA chief Tom Parsons issues Friday night lights warning over pre-season competitionsLoad more
