New GAA president elected as Derek Kent gets the vote at Annual Congress

WEXFORD native Derek Kent will be the 42nd president of the GAA following a vote at GAA Congress at Croke Park tonight. Kent was elected on the first count receiving 169 votes to surpass the 139 quota.The Taghmon-Camross clubman beat Tipperary’s Ger Ryan (76 votes) and John Murphy (32 votes) of Sligo to be elected as successor to the outgoing Jarlath Burns, who was only the 8th Ulsterman to hold the position.Kent will take over from the Armagh man in February of 2027 and will be the first Wexford president of the GAA since Michael Kehoe in 1952 and a third ever, including Patrick Breen back in 1926.He was Wexford chairman from 2017-2020 and has held the role of Leinster GAA chairman, as recently as last month, and chaired the GAA’s Central Competitions Control Committee (CCCC) for three years during Larry McCarthy’s presidency.
