SpongeBob SquarePants will speak as Gaeilge in cinemas

Cartoon icon SpongeBob SquarePants is set to get the ‘as Gaeilge’ treatment, as the globally-loved talking sponge is taking his linguistic talents to the big screen in a brand-new cinematic event, The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, which will be spoken through the Irish language. In a brilliant move to celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge in collaboration with Paramount Pictures, TG4 are bringing SpongeBob to Irish cinemasspecifically through the Irish language. As the nation’s native tongue has experienced a revival of late, SpongeBob as Gaelige is the ideal way to celebrate our national tongue with a globally recognised iconic character. And SpongeBob’s epic plan sees him attempt to follow in the footsteps of the legendary Flying Dutchman—the swashbuckling ghost pirate—into the uncharted, deepest depths of the ocean. While the global version features a star-studded cast including Ice Spice, Mark Hamill, and Regina Hall, the Irish version brings the familiar, beloved voices from the Macalla Teoranta dubbing team. These are the folks who have made SpongeBob a household name in Gaeltacht areas and classrooms alike for the past 25 years. The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants. Whether you’re a fluent speaker, a ‘cúpla focal’ enthusiast, or just a parent looking for a way to make Irish fun for the kids, this movie is the ticket. The film has already soaked up over $140m globally, proving that SpongeBob’s inimitable brand of chaotic kindness is relatable, whatever language you speak.   Since we’re getting ready for Seachtain na Gaeilge and SpongeBob’s big cinematic debut, you’ll need some aquatic vocabulary to fit right in at Bikini Bottom, or as SpongeBob himself would say As Gaeilge, at Bun an Inbhir).
