Starmer’s chief of staff McSweeney resigns over Mandelson scandal

“The party and I owe him a debt of gratitude”. That was Sir Keir Starmer’s response to the departure of Morgan McSweeney, his trusted chief of staff and the man credited with steering Labour to victory in the general election. It’s reported that the PM has now appointed the two deputies to take over as acting chiefs of staff with immediate effect. But opposition leaders and some Labour backbenchers too say Sir Keir himself should take ultimate responsibility for appointing Peter Mandelson as US ambassador and follow Mr McSweeney out of the door.
