RTE star Marty Morrissey on his greatest GAA moment 'in the history of genius'
Marty Morrissey believes Seamus Darby's famous goal for Offaly against Kerry in the 1982 All-Ireland football final remains the greatest GAA moment of all-time.The RTE commentator appeared on the Late Late Show's GAA special on Friday night and recalled some of his favourite moments from over the years with host Patrick Kielty.Darby famously found the back of the net in the dying minutes of the 1982 decider to deny Kerry their fifth All-Ireland title in a row.“It’s the greatest moment – well, I suppose the greatest moment in the history… in the history of genius," he said of Darby's goal.“My heroes were the Kerry football team, the bomber Liston, Jack O’Shea, Pat Spillane. What a team. Just unbelievable."They were going for five in a row in ’82 and the last ball came in - from Richie Connor into Seamus Darby.”Morrissey also revealed that John Fenton’s wonder goal for Cork against Limerick in the 1987 Munster Championship is another of his great GAA moments.“Another moment for me is a hurling moment — the 1987 Munster Championship, Cork against Limerick. What a goal this is," he added.“It hasn’t really been done before or since – that shows you how good it was.“That’s the beauty of ground hurling, which we don’t see enough of now. Even at the time, the goal stunned those watching.“Nobody saw it – we had to look back on it.”Click here to sign up to our sport newsletter, bringing you the top stories and biggest headlines from Ireland and beyond.
