Nicky Butt's love for GAA has everyone asking the same thing
It’s always funny to find out someone not from Ireland is into GAA.
Sometimes it’s because they have Irish heritage, like the Gallagher brothers and Ed Sheeran, and sometimes it’s just out of the blue, like Sarah Jessica Parker, who’s a fan of Donegal through owning a holiday home in the county.
However, some are just baffling to find out how they got into it, and that’s the case with Nicky Butt.

The former Manchester United star has come under fire recently for his constant tormenting of this current United team alongside his podcast co-host, Paul Scholes. However, on the most recent edition of The Good, The Bad and The Football, the pair decided to speak about stuff outside of football.
And it was in this chat when Nicky Butt declared himself a fan of the GAA, to which Paul Scholes and Paddy McGuinness were in disbelief.
Scholes then decided to test Butt’s knowledge and asked him several questions to which he had some interesting replies. When Scholes asked when he watched the GAA, Butt said, ‘It’s on Saturday mornings, so is Aussie Rules as well.’

It’s unclear what Saturday morning GAA Butt is on about, as in the UK the BBC only show six games live a season, namely the All-Ireland semi-finals and final for hurling and Gaelic football.
There are 10 league games as well as Ulster Championship broadcast on the BBC iPlayer and on BBC Northern Ireland, if Butt is going out of his way to watch that, but crucially, no Saturday morning show as far as we can see.
Scholes then asked Butt to name a team, and to be fair to Butt, he responded currently by saying ‘Waterford’ with Scholes then asking him ‘Waterford what?’ to which Butt responded ‘United’ jokingly. He also couldn’t name a player, leaving some wondering if Butt really was a fan of the sport.

Fans were baffled by Butt’s admission, but some embraced it.
One fan posted on X: ‘Even the English know now Gaelic Football is number 1 since the rule changes’, while another said ‘He just knows good sport when he sees it. Cause he named 3 great ones in the NRL, AFL and GAA.’
The one fan quipped about the GAA jumping on this potential PR stunt by posting: ‘The GAA will be giving the lads front row tickets to the Finals this year.’
