Hospitality woes worsen as four venues close EVERY DAY: Reeves under pressure to extend rates relief
Four hospitality venues closed every day at the end of last year – piling pressure on Rachel Reeves to extend business rates relief for pubs to other firms. There were 382 net closures in the final three months of 2025, according to industry research firm NIQ. The figures will fuel concerns over rising costs with venues facing yet higher taxes from April. The Chancellor is expected to announce a package of support to help pubs with higher business rates as soon as today. But industry bosses have said her plans – which come after a fierce backlash that has seen Labour MPs barred from many establishments – must extend to other firms.Karl Chessell, director of hospitality operators and food at NIQ, warned of ‘hundreds more’ closures on the horizon unless further support is introduced.Allen Simpson, of UK Hospitality, said: ‘Four businesses closing a day in the last quarter of 2025 is the unfortunate reality of a sector shouldering the highest tax burden in the economy.’ Out of business: There were 382 net closures of hospitality venues in the final three months of 2025DIY INVESTING PLATFORMSAJ BellAJ BellEasy investing and ready-made portfoliosHargreaves LansdownHargreaves LansdownFree fund dealing and investment ideasinteractive investorinteractive investorFlat-fee investing from £4.99 per monthFreetradeFreetradeInvesting Isa now free on basic planTrading 212Trading 212Free share dealing and no account feeAffiliate links: If you take out a product This is Money may earn a commission.
