Violent attack by boyfriend in Mallorca hotel leaves woman with fractured cheekbone

A drunken boyfriend launched a vicious assault on his partner whilst holidaying in Mallorca, forcing her to escape to the airport and catch a flight home. Nathan Kane repeatedly struck and slapped his then-girlfriend across her face and head during a horrifying attack in their hotel room, hundreds of miles away from home. The victim managed to get away and hotel staff assisted her in arranging a taxi to the airport. Upon returning to the UK, she attended the emergency department at the University Hospital of North Tees where doctors confirmed she had sustained a fractured cheek bone.Teesside Crown Court was told that Kane had been consuming alcohol heavily throughout the day when his "behaviour worsened" come evening, Recorder Andrew Walker explained whilst outlining the case. She described his demeanour as "loud and uncontrollable" before jealousy took hold and he began accusing her of cheating.Kane, now aged 26, declared he wanted to punch her before lunging forward and striking her across the face and head. The woman fled the hotel room for half an hour to allow him time to settle down, but upon her return discovered he had vanished - taking cash, his passport and the room key with him.Upon Kane's return to the hotel room, he initially offered an apology. "You then began to question her about where she had been," Recorder Walker stated, reports Teesside Live.He levelled further accusations before launching another attack on her. He struck her on the side of the head with an open hand, prevented her from leaving, and she collapsed to the ground."She said something to you," Recorder Walker stated. "You grabbed her by the neck and squeezed. That made her feel sick and lightheaded. She fell onto the sofa."Not content with that, you continued to hit her with substantial force."After she said she needed air, he permitted her onto the hotel room's balcony, from where she managed to flee, the court was told. She ran and concealed herself in the hotel toilets before getting assistance from staff, who arranged a taxi to the airport.Once there, she was able to organise a flight home. The woman sustained bruising to her face and arms, as well as a fractured cheekbone, during the incident in October 2024. In a victim impact statement, she said: "Every day I ask myself what I did to deserve this. What I could possibly said to make him that angry."She explained she has lost her spark following the attack, struggles to envision a future relationship, and experiences flashbacks. Calum McNicholas, representing Kane, told the court his client, who is now self-employed earning approximately £2,000 monthly, has no prior convictions and is dedicated to his own rehabilitation. He described this as an "isolated incident" and noted there is no history of domestic violence either before or after the offence. The court heard Kane had experienced trauma after discovering his mother in a critical condition before her death, and the incident took place on the first anniversary of her passing.Recorder Walker gave Kane, from Ellington Terrace in Ashington, a 21 month prison term suspended for two years. He must undertake 30 rehabilitation activity requirement days, 200 hours of unpaid work, a 120 day alcohol abstinence requirement and pay £1,000 in compensation to his victim at a rate of £100 a month.A seven year restraining order was also imposed.
