WhatsApp scam warning as fraudsters impersonate Gardaí to obtain bank details
Gardaí have warned WhatsApp users of a recent scam where fraudsters impersonate members of An Garda Síochána in a bid to obtain bank details.The scammers are calling members of the public on WhatsApp using the An Garda Síochána's crest as their profile image. Officers warned the fraud attempts have occurred recently and have urged the public to be vigilant.They issued the following advice to the public to protect yourself against these scams:Be suspicious of unsolicited messages or calls.Never disclose personal details over the phone.If you are cold called from someone saying they are a member of An Garda Síochána and they are looking for bank details or your PPS number, ask them for their credentials and ring their Garda station to verify.If you have been the victim of this or any other scam, contact your bank or financial institution immediately and report it to Gardaí.If you believe you’ve engaged with such a scam, contact your local Garda station.Join our Dublin Live breaking news service on WhatsApp. Click this link to receive your daily dose of Dublin Live content.
