Significant widening of SMA infant formula recall over risk of 'nausea and severe vomiting'
THE FOOD SAFETY Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has issued another recall of SMA baby formulas, affecting batches distributed in Ireland.
It’s the latest recall of the Nestlé products amid concerns about the presence of a toxin that can cause nausea and vomiting.
An initial recall of some products was issued last week, and more recalls followed. The list has today expanded significantly and now affects batches that may have been imported to Ireland from the UK.
Parents and guardians have been advised not to feed more of the implicated batches to infants or young children.
The cereulide toxin, which may be in the products, is caused by the bacterium Bacillus cereus. The toxin may be pre-formed in a food and is extremely heat-resistant.
Consumption of foods containing cereulide toxin can lead to nausea and severe vomiting. Symptoms can appear within five hours, the FSAI says. The duration of illness is usually 6 to 24 hours.
If no symptoms are displayed, no further action needs to be taken.
The FSAI says there have been no confirmed reports of illness associated with the consumption of the recalled products.

Among the seven product batches added to the recall list is SMA First Infant Milk 400g with batch code 51350346AA and expiry date May 2027, as well as batch code 52750346AD and expiry date October 2027.

Some SMA Anti-Reflux 800g were also recalled. Their batch codes are:

One batch of SMA Gold Prem 2 800g was recalled. Its code is 53090742F2 and its expiry date is November 2027.

Batch codes can be found on the base of the tin or box for powdered formulas, or the base of the outer box and on the side or top of the container for ready-made formulas.
Retailers have been asked to remove the implicated batches from sale and display recall notices at point-of-sale for customers.
