New Ultraviolent War Movie With 94% RT Score Is Now Available On VOD
Critics raved about this ultraviolent war movie when it came out back in November, pushing it to a strong Rotten Tomatoes score, and now it’s available to watch at home. Sisu: Road to Revenge picks up where 2023’s international cult hit Sisu left off, pitting Jorma Tommila's invincible Finnish soldier against Stephen Lang’s bloodthirsty Red Army officer, and viewers can now catch all the carnage from the comfort of home as the movie is available on VOD. Prime Video, Google Play, Apple TV and Fandango all have the Sisu sequel on offer, for $19.99.
Road to Revenge released theatrically on November 17 and racked up a soft $9.2 million on a budget of $12.2 million. The original took in $14.3 million on a budget of $6.5 million. Critics helped spur the original Sisu to cult hit status, their positive responses pushing the film to a 94% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The sequel repeated that exact performance, landing at 94% on RT, with a very strong 88% audience score. Reviewers praised Road to Revenge for upping the ante on the acclaimed first Sisu film, lauding its expertly-crafted set pieces, and comparing it favorably to the likes of John Wick and Mad Max: Fury Road. Critics noted the movie’s absurd level of violence, comparing its bloody and cartoonish action to everything from Looney Tunes to Quentin Tarantino. Some critics were turned off by the movie’s ridiculous carnage, though even the negative reviews give the film credit for its solid craftsmanship and breakneck pacing. ScreenRant’s Sisu: Road to Revenge review echoes the positive sentiments expressed by the majority of critics, calling the film’s mayhem “apocalyptic” and praising it for its pared-down narrative. “The final act, which takes place entirely within several cabins of a fast-moving train, is amongst the genre's most electrifying, taut sequences,” the review enthuses. It adds, “It may not be as elegant as John Wick or as politically charged as Mad Max, but Sisu white-knuckles us there just the same.” In an interview with ScreenRant back in November, Sisu: Road to Revenge director Jalmari Helander discussed the possibility of Sisu 3, after the second film’s emotional ending, and did not slam the door on the idea. “I like to think that this is a very beautiful ending for the story of Aatami Korpi,” Helander said. “But at the same time, you never know. Some day I might have an idea for the third one. Let’s see.”
