Driver on the 'naughty list' after 'a full festive bundle of bad decisions'

A driver in Portlaoise has ended up on the naughty list with the Gardai after they were stopped at a checkpoint on Tuesday. The Laois Roads Policing Unit was conducting a mandatory intoxicant testing checkpoint, testing motorists for alcohol and drugs as part of the Christmas road safety campaign. When they stopped one driver, they came across what they called ‘a full festive bundle of bad decisions’. Pic: Derick Hudson/Getty Images It turned out that the driver had a learner’s permit, which had expired in 2023. They are also currently disqualified from driving. On top of that, the driver allegedly gave the gardai false information. Gardai say the driver has since been arrested and charged, and the car was given ‘a sleigh ride to the impound yard’. Taking to social media, they wrote: ‘Santa called…you’re on the naughty list. ‘Laois RPU conducting a MIT checkpoint last night in Portlaoise stopped this Skoda while testing motorists for alcohol and drugs as part of the Christmas road safety campaign. ‘Unfortunately for this driver, Santa wasn’t the only one checking lists.’ They added: ‘Turns out this wasn’t a case of “just one small mistake”. This was a full festive bundle of bad decisions.’ Pic: Getty Images ‘Driver: Arrested and Charged. Car: Given a sleigh ride to the impound yard. Excuses: Rejected by Santa.’ Separately, it comes as just last month Gardai in Cork shared a message on the boot of a car that they ended up seizing. While on patrol in Cork City on Sunday, November 10, they pulled over a car that had the blunt message ‘I am a d***head’ written on the boot. Pic: Getty Images While that alone doesn’t necessarily warrant getting pulled over, Gardaí did find that the driver of the car was an unaccompanied learner, who was on their phone. As well as this, the car had multiple safety defects — with Gardaí joking that the message on the back of the car was correct. ‘Sometimes, the writing is on the car,’ Gardaí said in a savage dig on their traffic Twitter (X) account. ‘Learner driver detected using their phone. No full licence holder. Multiple safety defects. ‘Seized in Cork City on Sunday.’
