'AI Doom Loop' grips Ireland as CV surge overwhelms hiring system

Job applications have jumped 239% since ChatGPT launchedIreland's hiring system is being pushed into 'crisis' as AI generated job applications surge and trust collapses between recruiters and job seekers, a new report warns.Greenhouse's AI in Hiring study - covering more than 4,100 candidates and hiring professionals - shows job applications have jumped 239% since ChatGPT launched, with 68% of Irish job seekers now using AI to tailor CVs.Recruiters say they're overwhelmed as 62% report rising application volumes, yet 71% say less than half of applications are worth progressing. The result is what the report calls an 'AI Doom Loop' as candidates use AI to get noticed, while employers use AI to filter them. The report suggests that trust is at breaking point, with 45% of Irish job seekers losing faith in hiring and 43% blaming AI.Fraud fears are climbing too with 78% of Irish hiring managers saying they're more worried about deception than last year, while over half of candidates report seeing fake job ads.Greenhouse CEO Daniel Chait said: "Our latest data shows that neither side is happy with the hiring process right now. Trust is at an all-time low for both job seekers and recruiters. Candidates are doing whatever they can to break through the noise, while talent acquisition teams are drowning in so many applications they're looking for ways to sort through what's real and what's not."Unfortunately, although all sides are just trying to do their best, our survey shows that the collective result is worse for everyone. Job seekers use AI to apply to more and more jobs, while employers use it to filter candidates back out again."It's an AI doom loop that's getting worse, not better. Our vision is to build AI for hiring that is more human and that helps solve systemic problems on both sides."Despite the chaos, 69% of hiring managers say they now rely on AI to speed up decisions, even as the technology fuels the surge it's supposed to fix.Subscribe to our newsletter for the latest news from the Irish Mirror direct to your inbox: Sign up here.
