Irish actor Éanna Hardwicke jokes having Irish premiere of 'Saipan' in Cork was harder than climbing Mount Kilimanjaro
Eanna Hardwicke and Steve Coogan on the Late Late ShowFilmmaker and Irish actor Éanna Hardwicke joked that having the Irish premiere of “Saipan” in Cork was harder than climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.The 29-year-old Cork man was on tonight’s Late Late Show with Steve Coogan to promote the highly anticipated film.The film, which is due to be released on New Year's Day in Ireland, will detail the breakdown in the relationship between former Ireland captain Roy Keane and manager Mick McCarthy, a breakdown which ultimately culminated in the infamous Saipan showdown at the 2002 World Cup.Host Patrick Kielty opened the conversation with Coogan who has just returned from climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.He then turned to Hardwicke, who plays Keane, and asked what it was like to have the Irish premiere of “Saipan” in Cork.Hardwicke quipped: “It was harder than Kilimanjaro … It was terrifying.”He said he was sitting in the audience of the Everyman Theatre on Thursday night and said it was at that point he realised it was a “mental idea” to do it in Cork.Hardwicke: “We’re going to premiere this film in Cork in front of 800 Corkonians and within five minutes they’ll be able to turn around and say ‘nah’ but thankfully it went down a treat.“It was very special, it was my local theatre and I did plays there as a kid and I’ve been going there my whole life. It was a very special kind of homecoming and a great Irish premier.”
