Jamie-Lee O’Donnell says Derry Girls 10 year reunion 'would be wonderful'

(L-R) Michelle Mallon (Jamie - Lee O'Donnell), James Maguire (Dylan Llewellyn) Sweary, sex-mad schoolgirl Michelle Mallon and her friends captured the nation’s hearts as they navigated teenage life during the Troubles in Derry Girls. But three years after the sitcom ended, actress Jamie-Lee O’Donnell says she has lost touch with most of her co-stars.She said: “I had a couple of years of just laying low in Ireland. I was going through a lot of mental health stuff and had to figure a few things out.“I had to take some downtime and started therapy so I didn’t see anybody for a long time.”But now the 38-year-old says she would jump at the chance to reunite with the cast of Derry Girls. She said: “Michelle gave me my platform for this level of my career, as did creator Lisa McGee. It’s always going to have a special place in my heart.“It’s something I’m incredibly proud of. It represented my community so well and put us on a massive stage. I would 100% go back to it. If Lisa was to write anything, I would do it.”And if a script isn’t possible, Jamie-Lee has another idea: “A 10-year reunion of where are they now would be wonderful.“Lisa could put us on the moon and it would make sense and be hilarious.”Jamie-Lee is currently back on screen in BBC comedy-drama, Leonard and Hungry Paul, based on Ronan Hession’s novel of the same name.Set in Dublin and narrated by Hollywood star Julia Roberts, it follows two thirty-somethings as they bond over board games while dealing with personal struggles.Ghostwriter Leonard (Alex Lawther) and postal worker Paul (Laurie Kynaston) tackle the death of Leonard’s mum, the wedding of Paul’s sister and Leonard’s crush on colleague Shelley (Jamie-Lee).She says: “The script was really different to what I had done before. I really enjoyed the cosiness of it, the charm, the subtlety in the relationships.“It’s very much part of Irish culture and it translated really well to TV.”Join our Dublin Live breaking news service on WhatsApp. Click this link to receive your daily dose of Dublin Live content.
