Van driver with 9 penalty points spotted with 'phone in one hand, and a cigarette in the other' while behind wheel
A van driver with nine penalty points has been nabbed after Gardaí spotted them driving with a phone in one hand, and a cigarette in the other. Kildare Gardaí attached to the Naas Roads Policing unit were on patrol along the N7 when they noticed a van driver who had a “phone in one hand and cigarette in other hand”. The motorist was hit with a €160 fine as well as being slapped with three penalty points - and with the driver’s nine points already, they will now be facing a six month disqualification from driving. According to the Road Safety Authority, distracted driving — including mobile phone use — is estimated to be a contributing factor in 20–30 per cent of all collisions on Irish roads.
