Garda probe after human skull found in back garden of Cork home

A man aged in his 30s has died after he was assaulted in Co Cork, gardai have said (PA)Gardaí have confirmed they are investigating after a human skull was discovered in a shopping bag at the rear of a property in rural Cork on Friday.According to gardai, officers were alerted to the discovery of the partial human remains at a location near Eyeries, in west Cork on Friday afternoon.In a statement, a spokesperson said: “The scene is currently preserved pending technical examination.“The remains, believed to be a human skull, were removed for further examination and DNA analysis.“Enquiries are ongoing. No further information is available at this time.”The Sunday World understands the skull was discovered by a woman clearing overgrowth from the back garden of a house.It’s understood the skull was located inside an old Supervalu shopping bag.She alerted authorities and the the garden was immediately sealed off.Gardai said further examination of the skull will be required before it can be dated and a determination made of the sex and age of the deceased.A neighbour, who spoke with the Irish Examiner, said: “Everyone is pretty shocked at this.“The young lady doing the clearing work couldn’t believe it when she found it.“She got straight onto the Gardaí and they went down to take a look, and now the whole garden has been sealed off.“I suppose they want to see if there are any other body parts in there and to see what else was dumped with the skull.”The house is understood to be owned by a woman who moved to the area around 20 years ago with her husband.Another woman is understood to have moved into the house and had started clearing out garden areas to build a polytunnel when she found the skull.
