China has passed a new ‘ethnic unity’ law which critics warn could in fact worsen the rights of ethnic minorities. Children must now be taught in Mandarin rather than their native language. There are 55 ethnic minority groups in China which represent less than 10 per cent of the population. On paper, the new legislation aims to promote integration between minority groups and China says it’ll help people get jobs in the future. But critics argue that this will cut people off from their culture and language and is an attempt to assimilate them further into the Han ethnic majority. China has long been accused of restricting the rights of ethnic minorities such as Uyghurs, Mongols and Tibetans.
