Met Office issues 15-hour power cut warning for 47 areas on Thursday - full list

The Met Office has updated its rare amber "extreme heat" warning. Areas of the East Midlands, East of England, London and the South East, North West England, South West England, West Midlands, and Yorkshire and the Humber are under the alert from 9am until 11.59pm on Thursday.

The forecaster said temperatures could hit a scorching 28C in parts of the East Midlands and West England - anticipated to be the hottest areas of the country - potentially affecting transport, infrastructure, and health. Power cuts could also affect some homes and businesses if heat-sensitive systems and equipment fail.

The Met Office added: "People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It's easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.

"Stay up to date with the weather forecast for your area and follow any advice from emergency services and local authorities."

People in the affected areas have been urged to drink plenty of water, stay out of the sun, and avoid exercise between 11am and 3pm, when the Sun is most intense.

When going outside, carry water and a hand-held battery-powered fan, and dress in light fabrics in light colours.

Closing curtains in rooms that face the sun can also help to keep homes cooler.
