Meta ordered to pay almost $1bn over social media harm to children

Social media giant Meta has been fined an additional $567m by a court in New Mexico in the second part of a landmark case about child safety and online harms.

The judge described Meta as a “public nuisance” and said it had failed to warn the public about the potential risks its platforms posed to children.

Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp, said it worked hard to keep people safe online and would appeal against the ruling.
