Project Zomboid’s long-awaited Build 42.20 arrived last week, and with it being the weekend, players finally had time to jump in and properly explore the update. It turns out a lot of people did, pushing Project Zomboid’s all-time player count to a brand-new record.

The new player count reached a peak of 121,603, far above the roughly 69k peak previously seen during older builds. The reason is simple. Build 42 adds a huge amount of new building content, alongside a massively revamped map filled with unique locations, environmental storytelling, and plenty of new details to discover.

In our own save, we found several memorable examples. One farmer’s barn appeared to have become a final lock-in, with police officers, ravers, and others seemingly deciding to go out with one last celebration before one of them turned into a zombie and infected the rest. Another area showed signs of a suicide in a basement, only for the victim to return as a zombie anyway. Elsewhere, abandoned homes suggested that survivors had tried to fortify them before eventually being forced to flee.

It is that level of detail that helps immerse players even further in the zombie survival experience, which is likely a major reason the game is reaching new highs. Combined with the new building options, Build 42 creates an even larger and more believable world for players to inhabit in multiplayer. There is now much more room for animals, farming communities, larger survivor groups, and other activities across servers. That means many more reasons to turn into TWD politics episodes and go to war for what little resources remain.

Community reaction has also been overwhelmingly positive. Many players are sharing screenshots of redesigned towns, unusual discoveries hidden around the map, tips on new item locations, and other little things they quite like. It’s an amazing time to return or try the game out, given all the little details and expanded features added with Build 42. It’s certainly more sizable than .16, which readjusted the starting occupations a bit more.
