Russell described the last thing he ever wanted to be was a Christian, mocking his early impressions of believers as either lifeless or fanatical, and admitting he quickly learned not to trust anyone or anything. He said the first part of genuinely becoming Christian came free, being shown that the world's entire culture and systems are a trick, a distraction, a scam, the counterfeit world of the Evil One. He compared it to spending his energy securing a better deck chair on the Titanic instead of asking who funded the ship and whether it was ever meant to reach New York, arguing that powerful interests often benefit the most from the very crises that devastate everyone else. Sometimes the real question isn't how to survive the sinking ship, it's who built it.
