Making Good Scents

When high-performance and luxury automakers collaborate with lifestyle brands, they almost always form partnerships with companies whose products evoke similar visceral reactions as their vehicles. In other instances, they’ll align with brands and industries that celebrate and are predicated upon engineering mastery—highly complicated timepieces are a perfect example. Historically, the world’s elite automakers have not ventured into the realm of luxury fragrances. Similarly, the world’s foremost perfumeries haven’t collaborated with elite motorcar brands. Until now.

As the latest installment in Xerjoff’s series of distinct collaborations, the Italian perfume house has partnered with Automobili Lamborghini to create a trio of distinctive fragrances. For almost 20 years, Xerjoff has specialized in exotic perfumes, crafting 170 original scents that are available in more than 130 countries around the world. The brand always has striven to innovate within the world of perfumery while still preserving the industry’s heritage and long-standing traditions. This latest collaboration reinforces that mission statement. The collection’s inspiration comes from the sensory experience of driving a sports car; and according to the perfume brand, it is an artistic journey “where scent, beauty, and emotion converge.”

Visually, the collection’s packaging is equally reflective of the two brands’ union. Xerjoff’s distinctive flacon is bathed in three dynamic colors that boldly represent Lamborghini’s super sports cars. The vessel is also distinguished by a matte finish with a matte, black cap; and for the first time in the maison’s history, the brand’s traditional XJ symbol has been replaced with the automaker’s iconic shield.

Of course, the fragrances, themselves, are just as striking.

Fierezza, for example, is defined by contrasts between pink peppercorn, incense, and marine notes. That combination is then folded into the warming character of suede and myrrh. As Xerjoff acknowledges, the fresh, Oriental scent was inspired by “the solemn moment in which the hands grip the steering wheel.” Even Fierezza’s name is significant, as it was chosen to represent Lamborghini’s engineering prowess, design philosophy, and Italian identity.

Avanguardia takes its cues from “the roar of the engine and the raw power of speed.” To convey those sensory elements, the perfume house began by marrying cherry and davana, then leaned into fractionated patchouli oil and relied on black violet notes for their depth. The end result is a fragrance that is equal measures woody, fruity, and leathery.

Finally, there’s Perseveranza, which Xerjoff created to reflect the “emotional echo that follows arrival at the destination.” Such a scent—defined by its brightness, as well as its signature woody and spicy character—is comprised of fresh ginger and cedar notes with the smokiness of vetiver and the roundness of tonka beans.

Together, the three scents form the latest collection for Xerjoff Blends, a series of unique fragrances born from the perfume house’s work with notable brands and influential people rooted in culturally significant fields. As the perfumery acknowledges, these collaborations allow the brand to gain exposure in other creative spheres while also creating a product that is reflective of both specialties.

“When embarking on this collaboration, I knew we could create something truly special together,” says Sergio Momo, Xerjoff’s founder and creative director. “Xerjoff and Automobili Lamborghini belong to different worlds, yet we both embody the essence of ‘Made in Italy.’ We share the same values and the same goal of achieving excellence, and that is exactly what we have accomplished with these perfumes.”

Moreover, the partnership serves as a historic moment, as the two institutions are exploring new sensory frontiers together for the first time. The collaboration also introduces a fresh position by which enthusiasts can appreciate the super sports car company. Lamborghinis have historically served as revered objects of exceptional design and performance; and now, through this collection of perfumes, the power, creative tension, and determination that are emblematic of the “The House of Sant’Agata Bolognese” are reinvented in olfactory form.

“This collaboration with Xerjoff was born from the sharing of values deeply rooted in our DNA: excellence, research and attention to detail,” says Automobili Lamborghini’s Director of the Americas Region, Christian Mastro. “Together with Xerjoff, we have created a project that interprets Lamborghini’s iconic spirit and avant-garde attitude in a new sensory dimension.”
