Golfer has extreme mishap at Women's Scottish Open
With an unfortunate string of events on the fifth hole, LPGA Tour star Charley Hull got off to a nightmare start at the ISPS HANDA Women’s Scottish Open.
Hull has enjoyed a relatively good season thus far. In February, she shot a sensational final-round 65 to claim her fifth Ladies European Tour title, winning by one stroke at 19-under-par.
In June at the US Women’s Open, she surged on Sunday with a final-round 67 to finish tied for second place at 7-under-par. She fell just one stroke short of world No. 1 Nelly Korda, which marked Hull’s fifth career runner-up finish in a major championship.

However, the first round of the Women’s Scottish Open at Dundonald Links could not have gone much worse for Hull, after she suffered a nightmare par-5 fifth hole.
A 15-foot birdie attempt trickled off the tricky false front into the rough, resulting in four chips and an eventual quadruple-bogey nine.
‘Ooft, that has got to settle,’ said former Women’s Open champion Catriona Matthew on commentary about the birdie putt. ‘That’s gone.’

It left Hull on five-over-par for the tournament and well out of contention, following on from a bogey five on the par-4 opener at Dundonald. Four consecutive pars to finish the front nine saw Hull make the turn at +5, while she ended the day a further shot back after carding a six-over-par 78, leaving her tied for 117th place.
Hull is the world No.7 after dropping from No. 3 earlier in the year and is making her tenth appearance in the co-sanctioned event this week, which she has played consecutively since 2017, making every cut.
Also in action at the event is Irishwoman Leona Maguire, who currently sits on even par after her first round in a tie for 21st place. Hull’s best finish at the Women’s Scottish Open remains a 5th place effort, but after her first round woes, a fifth-place finish seems a big task.
