Phasmophobia’s latest update has added the newly reworked 13 Willow Street map, bringing new features, designs and more. Along with the update, the map has some new Easter eggs. While it’s not quite the length of Point Hope, the 13 Willow Street Easter eggs add in several bits of cat lore you never knew about the company.
The lore and Easter eggs on the map are largely cat focused. There are cat carriers, beds, toys and climbing posts all over the map. But the lore is largely to do with Kinetic Games’ own cats. For starters, the map is named after Willow, a passed cat cherished by one of the developers.
In addition, the art room has pictures of cats everywhere. These cats are the actual cats of the developers who worked on the Willow Street map rework and at Kinetic Games. That’s why there are so many cats on the wall. This was confirmed to us by a Kinetic PR representative in an email exchange while we were playtesting the map just before the map was released to the public.
The other secret is a cat noise that happens in the master bedroom closet. If you tuck yourself into the back corner of the walk-in wardrobe, you will occasionally hear a cat noise. The cat doesn’t have any other trigger other than hiding there every now and then.
The cat is also likely a reference to the famous scientific thought experiment known as Schrödinger’s Cat. Schrödinger poses that a cat inside a box has an equal chance of being alive or dead, and it is only when we observe the cat that we know what state it is in. Until then, both possibilities can be true. It’s an analogy to describe superposition and quantum physics, and the cat is a playful way to illustrate it. Given that the cat in the closet comes from the box to the side, it seems a safe bet that Schrodinger’s cat is the reference being made.
We did dumbly try getting the cat to spawn by throwing toy mice and cat balls everywhere, but that never did anything.
