CAMEROON: CRRC Ziyang has delivered seven diesel locomotives which will be used to haul bauxite from the Minim Martap mine to the port of Douala.
The mine is being developed by the Camalco Cameroon subsidiary of Canyon Resources, which expects its initial fleet of seven locos and 160 wagons to provide a transport capacity of 35 000 tonnes per month. The first 60 wagons are expected to arrive from China in mid-August, and the remaining 100 later this year.
‘We are pleased to be making continual and rapid progress at Minim Martap as we work toward commencement of mining and our first shipment target of Q4 2026’, Canyon Resources Managing Director Peter Secker said when the locos arrived at the end of June.
Subject to securing an additional US$160m in funding, a second stage of the project would see rail infrastructure upgrades and the delivery of a further 15 locomotives and 400 wagons to increase capacity to around 105 000 tonnes per month from Q3 2027.
Canyon Resources announced in May that Camalco Cameroon had paid CFAFr9.852bn to increase its stake in rail operator Camrail from 9.1% to 26.9%. It made an initial investment in Camrail in Q2 2025, and said increasing its stake would provide it with greater influence across bauxite transport and strengthened oversight of the planned upgrade, further de-risking the mine-to-port logistics chain.
Camalco Cameroon also holds a 42.8% stake in the Douala port operator.
