Consortium appointed to deliver five metro projects in Hanoi

VIETNAM: The Hanoi Metropolitan Railway Management Board appointed the consortium of property developer Vinhomes and the VinSpeed subsidiary of industrial conglomerate Vingroup on June 23 to carry out the design, procurement and construction of five metro lines totalling 267 km.

The city held a project launch ceremony for the various lines on the same day as the consortium was named, although all five routes remain in the planning phase. The authorities also updated their development plans, aiming to complete no less than 979 km of metro lines by 2045, 600 km of which are to be operational by 2035.

The estimated total cost of the five projects is 1 300tr dong (€43bn), although there has so far been no official confirmation of the funding available to underwrite these costs.

The 81 km Line 1 would link Hung Vuong Stadium and Ngoc Hoi in the southeast to Yen Vien and Thu Lam in the north and northwest via Hanoi main station. It would mainly use repurposed main line rail corridors. Project cost is estimated at 389 527bn dong (€13bn).

The next sections of the already under-construction metro Line 2 are expected to lengthen the route by 45 km. These would link Nội Bài Airport in the north to Nam Thăng Long, and Trần Hưng Đạo to Thượng Đình on metro Line 2A with future phases taking the line further south to Hung Vuong Stadium. These would add to the initial 11.5 km Nam Thăng Long – Trần Hưng Đạo section. Cost of the newly built sections are estimated at 271 708bn dong (€9bn)

The 66 km Line 8 is to link Hoa Lac on the under-construction Line 5 in the west to Duong Xa in the east, via Mai Dich and Linh Nam. Project cost is estimated at 317 393 bn dong (€10.6bn).

The circular metro Line 10 would be 43 km long, linking Co Loa, Vo Chi Cong, Ring Road 3 and Ring Road 2.5. Project cost is estimated at 206 786bn dong (€6.9bn).

The 32 km Line 14 would connect Thang Long Bridge in the north to Ocean Park in the southeast. Project cost is estimated at 129 842bn dong (€4.3bn).
