Since North Carolina's famed 11-foot-8-inch can-opener bridge was raised to 12 feet and 4 inches, the bridge's steady flow of victims has slowed to a trickle. Thanks to a major road closure, an overpass in Louisville, Kentucky, has stepped up its game, averaging one victim a day.
Five miles of I-65 in Louisville have been closed for the summer due to construction. Trucks attempting to detour via 3rd Street are — literally — running into Kentucky's 11-foot-8 can-opener. Just as in North Carolina, drivers blow past an "All Trucks Turn Left at Signal," an "Overheight Must Turn" sign with flashing yellow lights, and multiple 11' 8" warning signs, receiving the can-opener treatment.
There have been 38 crashes since the closure began on June 1st, with four crashes on the first day, according to Louisville Can Opener's live tracker. There was already a crash this morning.
In this particularly impressive example, an intrepid driver makes a second attempt at passing under the underpass.
Tragically, there is currently no camera pointed at this can opener, with dash cam footage, news reports, and Hall of Shame photos. A crowd-funded live cam is in the works and should be online soon.
